New Player Info – All Players Welcome

Image

Welcome to the Chicago Lions Sevens Team!

If you are a college rugby player that will be playing with the Chicago Lions for the duration of the summer you need to fill out a CIPP Transfer.

This is only a temporary transfer and will not effect your college eligibility.

If you are a new player or not previously CIPP’d and plan on attending practice and playing rugby this summer it is very important to register with USA Rugby (CIPP)

You can do that by going to the USA RUGBY website:

1.  Go to https://membership.usarugby.org/default.aspx

2.  Click on the Create/Renew Individual Membership link.

3.  Fill out the required fields and continue.

4.  If you have a previous membership, the system should find it.  If not, answer the questions and continue.

5.  Read through the waiver and agree to the conditions; print this waiver and bring it to practice for the club secretary to collect. The club is required to keep these throughout the year to document player eligibility!

6.  Fill out your info as a ‘Player’ at ‘Senior’ level for ‘Chicago Lions Rugby Football Club (Club)’ and click save.

7.  Click on Check Out and pay.

8.  Congratulations. You are now a certified rugby player and can play in all of our events.

The Chicago Lions Sevens Team welcomes (former player) MC Laubscher as Assistant Coach effective immediately. MC was quoted as saying, ”I am delighted to assist Aaron in this top-class sevens program he has built with his team and look forward to working with extremely talented rugby athletes.”

Chicago Lions Sevens Update – Vegas 2012

The Lions Sevens team got off to a rocky Thursday morning losing to the Spanish National Team (they regularly beat the USA) 31-5. The Spanish Team had spent the previous 3 months training together and were very fit and fast.

In the afternoon the Lions bounced back against Bermuda beating them 33-0.

Friday morning the Lions finished their pool by playing Peru, beating them 38-0. With Spain winning all their games the Lions finished 2nd in the pool and advanced to the Cup competition. The Lions drew Chile in the Quarterfinals. Chile proved to be a very physical side. The Lions were on the back foot for much of the game and lost 24-7. Losing the Quarterfinal meant the Lions were now playing for the Plate (5th Place). Friday afternoon they Played Romania in another tough physical encounter and were again bested. I’m sorry, I don’t know what the score was.

This is the first time that the Lions Sevens Team has played against national teams. It was great experience to play against teams of this caliber after completely dominating the domestic competition in Las Vegas last year.

The Lions Sevens Team would like to thank all the fans, supporters, sponsors, Davenport University, GVSU Indoor Facility, and all individuals that helped out. Special thanks go out to Dick Smith, Lisa and the Keith Brown Memorial Foundation, Bob MacArthur, Tony Rio, Bobby Bloomfield, Kruger Van Biljon, Patrick O’reilly, Ethan Porter (Asst. Manager), Lucas Theim (injured), MC Laubscher (injured), Eddy Long, Mike Harriet, Tanner, Jason Braid, Evan Haim and his Band of Merry Pranksters, and all the other Lions that came out to practice and played in the poker tournament. And, of course, our amazing sponsors!

Lions Fall Update – Las Vegas Sevens Feb 2012

If you don’t already know, the Lions lost to Belmont Shore (who would go on to win the National Championship 2011) in a closely contested Quarterfinal Game. However, the Lions did go on to beat several other very good teams and came away with the Plate Championship. See video of games HERE.

Not wanting to wait until June to play sevens again, the team has decided to once again head out west in February 2012 and play in the Las Vegas Invitational. As of now, the Lions are in the Elite bracket with international teams such as Russia and Chile that could not fit   into the pool of 16 teams for the IRB Sevens tournament that headlines this event. The Elite bracket is set to compete on Thursday February 9th and Friday the 10th, with the Championships played on Saturday the 11th (Final possibly to be played in the Stadium).
